Crusader 454 specs

Coming to this conclusion was easy because their engines simply outperform all others in terms of service life. But that's not all. Several years ago, I had the opportunity to tear down a Crusader engine and that of a competitor, side by side on the bench, and make a detailed comparison. If you don't think engines and how they are installed make a difference, compare these two.

On left a pair of Mercruiser 's installed in a Forumula F; on right Crusader 's in a Tiara Any guesses as to the difference in maintenance costs? The striking things about the Crusaders is how uncluttered they are.

How would you like to change plugs and oil filters on the Mercs? Start with the fact that the Crusader had 4-bolt, stepped and stabilized main bearing caps, whereas the other engine had a 2-bolt, unstepped, unstabilized main bearing caps. As some of you may know, GM has long made two lines of basically the same engine, the better of the two being named the "TargetMaster" line of heavier duty, more precision engines for trucks. While I don't claim to be intimate with the GM product line of engines - the last time I personally rebuilt a TargetMaster was 10 years ago - there isn't any doubt in my mind that Crusader is using the TargetMaster line.

The basic block was an all-around better block than it's competitor's. The basic differences were in the lower end, as well as obviously larger cooling passages.

Crusader's engines aren't widely used for race boat engine conversions like its competitors engines are, probably because Crusader doesn't get involved with the racing crowd. But it is interesting to note that when its competitor's engines are used by the race engine builders, they always add stabilizers to the main bearing caps. Sort of makes you wonder why they don't just use the better block in the first place, doesn't it?

Well, part of the answer is that this is a high performance, not a heavy duty block, made for speed but not endurance. Why not electronic ignitions and EFI fuel systems? Quite simply because of cost and reliability. Crusader has strictly avoided electronic systems, and rightly so because let's face it, these engines get wet. Whether its leaking decks or hatches, stuffing boxes throwing water or leaking hoses or whatnot, reliability goes out the hatch when sensitive systems are involved.

Experience people know that the outstanding virtue is ruggedness and the ability to survive the environment. So, too, ease and cost of servicing. In that regard, you just can't beat the plain old carburetor and standard ignition system. All decent mechanics and many boat owners know how to fix these things, and at reasonable cost.

When you start adding digital electronics and delicate metering systems, the cost can only go up, and the number of mechanics who work on them goes down. No matter how much fuel a sophisticated system may save, or improvements in efficiency or power, nothing compares to reliability and low cost repairs.

Its your money, take your choice. In the real world, Crusader outperforms all others in terms of reliability and longevity. Its not unusual for me to find Crusader engines years old that are still going strong in the seawater environment, whereas its rather rare to find other engines going this long.

There are two primary reasons for this: 1 better cooling system design, and 2 better gaskets. One engine marinizer has had gasket and cooling system problems for going on two decades now and still displays no willingness to resolve the problem. Mostly on seawater cooled engines, but not infrequently on FWC engines as well.During the American Muscle Car era of the late s to the early s, Chevy developed a series of engines, commonly referred to as "Big Blocks.

A V-8 of this size can easily be setup to generate in excess of horsepower. While the was used in high-horsepower cars such as the Corvette and Chevelle, the Chevy automobile engine made horsepower stock. Chevy's parent company, General Motors, adapted the automobile engine into the horsepower, marine engine. Based on the same cubic-inch big block Chevy, General Motor's Marine Engine division set up the motor specifically for use in boats.

Because General Motors was not a boat maker, but a motor and automobile maker, their marine engines division often sold parts to companies specializing in setting up marine engines such such as Mercruiser.

The horsepower, marine is different from the automobile engine from which it was derived. Because boats have just one gear and very different power and torque requirements, everything that shapes power and torque characteristics are different: compression, valve-train, intake and headers. Water pumps for marine engines are specifically designed to withstand corrosion because the systems use open water for cooling and may contain salt, minerals and all kinds of chemicals.

Marine carburetors are also designed so that fuel delivery is uninterrupted despite the extreme pitch of the boat during cornering. All electrical components must be able to withstand a hostile, wet environment. The GM marine had a bore of 4.

The engine breathed through a four-barrel carburetor, and ignition was provided by a Delco Electric unit. The marine weighs lbs and makes horsepower, at its maximum RPM of 4, This article was written by the It Still Works team, copy edited and fact checked through a multi-point auditing system, in efforts to ensure our readers only receive the best information.

Marine Power 454 Owner's Manual

Boat Design Net. Hello all, I have been presented with an opportunity to get my hands on a recently rebuilt complete Crusader XLI motor. I am trying to confirm installation dimensions as well as engine output specs. I am unsure of the year at this point so not too sure how much I can expect.

Does anyone have any information on the years that this motor was produced, dimensions, specs etc? I have some height concerns with the MPI motor compared to my 4bbl 7. I believe that the manifolds are of a lower profile, it's the intake that I am concerned with.

Any input is appreciated as always. Last edited: Jul 8, Thank you Angel! AKHMay 30, Hi AKH, welcome to the forum! I decided on a reman long block for my Merc. The height of the MPI motor is a little tight in my bilge.

The one I was looking at was at a local marina advertised on Craigslist. Good luck on your search! Thanks for the info. Do you happen to have the Craigslist link still available? Sorry, I do not. It was almost a year ago. Last edited: Jun 3, JavaScript seems to be disabled in your browser.

Complete combustion of the fuel would be ideal, however, given the inefficiency of the engine, this is very difficult. Timing is adjusted to maximize the fuel burn as much as possible.

Fuel takes a certain amount of time to burn. As the engine rpm increases the time the fuel remains in the engine decreases exponentially, thus ignition timing is advanced to allow more time for combustion. Mark the timing mark on the harmonic balancer with the white marker to make it more visible for the timing light.

Look for the long straight line on the balancer and mark this. Look at the timing plate on the driver's side of the timing chain cover.

Notice that it has a V cut in the center of the marker plate -- this is top dead center on the compression stroke. The numbers to the left of the V, looking at the engine from the front, are degrees of advance or how many degrees before top dead center.

Gas Engines

The numbers to the right of the V are degrees after top dead center. You always want to have the timing advanced or before top dead center.

Connect the timing light by connecting the black lead to the negative battery posts and red lead to the positive battery post. Lay the wires across the top of the radiator or intake manifold so they don't get caught in the fan.

Connect the carbon connector probe to the number 1 cylinder spark plug wire by pressing on the connector handle and placing the jaws over the wire and allowing the jaws to close.

Disconnect the vacuum advance hose on the distributor and plug the hose with a screw. Start the engine. Shine the timing light at the harmonic balancer timing mark on the driver's side of the engine.

Radiometrix ntx2b

Read the number on the timing plate adjacent to the timing mark on the balancer. The initial timing should be 4 degrees before top dead center BTDC. If the mark is adjacent to a higher number BTDC, the distributor must be rotated clockwise to bring it down to 4 degrees. If the number is lower or after top dead center ATDCturn the distributor counterclockwise. Turn the engine off.

Loosen the distributor hold down clamp using a wrench. Start the engine and rotate the distributor as outlined previously. Walk around to the driver's side and check the timing to see if you moved the distributor enough to place the timing mark on the 4-degree mark BTDC.

Keep adjusting the distributor until 4 degrees before top dead center BTDC is achieved. Tighten the distributor hold down bolt using the distributor wrench. Pull the screw out of the vacuum advance hose and reconnect the hose to the distributor. I run her about rpms and get to around 16mph ish I'm a little hesitant to actually find out by pushig it. Boat is new to me and is running pretty good couple of slow idle stalls but immediate restarts You need to open it up from time to time. Best way to know if all is good. A couple of minutes now and then won't hurt. It depends on water conditions, weight of the boat at the time. Jim P. Manual says The boat planes at about rpm and that is where I cruise most of the time.

At you use LOTS of fuel. So they would be carbed pre-Vortecs if originals, yes?

And WOT top speed of 44kts at rpm. Plus note the attainable full WOT RPM now, and next time you haul have the props scanned and pitch adjusted if needed to attain at least the middle of Crusader's recommended range for WOT RPM for those engines which was rpm as per my old Crusader all-engines owner's manual, which also specifies 89 octane gas.

Also, a full vacuum gauge test could provide a good helpful perspective of engines' condition. I suspect your economy could improve at a little higher rpm, particularly if you are adjusting trim tabs for highest rpm at any particular cruise throttle position.

Boat runs beauti at to but if I push it I can't get above ish. I'm not going to sweat it since it seems to be running good minus a minor bogging last week on one motor BoaterEd Store. Save Password. Crusader cid Max RPM. Douglas Warren "You never get sumthin' for nuthin'".
